During our first weeks of school, we have learned rules, routines, and many techniques from whole brain teaching. We have also completed our 3D reading assessments and will be contacting you to let you know what your child's starting point for reading is this year.
During the first nine weeks of school, we discussed the different sizes of letters in the alphabet (tall, itty-bitty, and ditch letters) so that we can improve our handwriting. We have learned to distinguish between vowels and consonants. We reviewed all the short vowel sounds and reviewed the Animated Literacy characters to help us remember these sounds. We learned new reading strategies...making predictions and asking questions as we read. We learned to identify the characters and the setting in literature. We also learned about some real superheroes...Johnny Appleseed and Christopher Columbus.
During the second nine weeks of school, we have begun working on blends with short vowel sounds. We learned about the sun, moon, and planets in science. We discussed how change happens in communities from long ago to today. We also discussed where we live and found places we know on Google Earth. We are learning many familiar fairy tales as well as some fractured fairy tales to compare and contrast. We continue to focus on using our reading strategies, such as making predictions, making connections, asking questions, visualizing, and summarizing.
