The Nightingale
Based on the story by Hans Christian Anderson
Performed January 31, 2008 & February 1, 2008

Not only did they learn about Hans Christain Anderson and some of his short stories, second and third grade students were immersed in a study about China, it's customs, culture, geography, and language, while in production for their show.  Mr. Jim Grant, music teacher at Fremont STARS, travelled to China during the winter break and brought back items that made what they had learned in the classroom tangible and real.  Students were able to see currency, waving cats, red envelopes, Chinese lanterns, terracota warriors, and a men's traditional Chinese cheongsam.  Students also enjoyed their cast party at a local Chinese restaurant, where they were able to sample Chinese food, many of them for the first time.  There they also received a red envelope with a Chinese yuan that Mr. Grant got for them while in China.
